In the Gina Ford closet
Clearly, having babies is the smart thing to do, when it comes to successful blogging.
In January, we had the highest number of visitors ever.
Anyway, today, S took baby L to get weighed. She has put on over a pound since birth, so she's doing great, and is on the 85th percentile.
Unfortunately, while in the clinic waiting area with about 15 other mums, it was necessary for S to stimulate L to keep her awake - as per the routine we use (Gina Ford, who we think is a genius and ought to be made a Dame of the British Empire or something..... and some other people think is some sort of monster).
S removed some of L's clothing, rubbed her tummy, hands and feet, and blew on her face.
It worked.... but it also provoked a horrified lecture from one mother, in front of everyone else, about how "for the first three months babies are still in the womb" (not, in fact, correct) and so you shouldn't wake them up.
S had already experienced two bouts of this behaviour on other occasions, albeit more subtle..... receiving pointed questions like 'Isn't your baby cold? What are you doing to her? Why don't you let her sleep? But you can't go out anywhere if you put them on a routine' etc, etc.
Even Lenka the Slovakian Nanny has innocently remarked that she didn't know you could put a baby this young on a routine and had never seen anyone try it before.
This is all a new experience for S, because American mothers never commented on her parenting.
But attachment parenting isn't so embedded as the norm in the States.
Anyway, S has already decided she isn't going to hide how she does things, and so today she simply changed the subject, while continuing to rub L's tummy.
But changing the subject didn't work.
S was promptly told by another mother that she should get L's ears pierced.
S wonders what it is about her that provokes this sort of thing. Nobody else in the waiting area was getting told what to do.
She must have a certain sort of face....
The weird thing is that Gina Ford is the bestselling baby care author in the UK. She has cornered 25% of the British market.
Therefore of the 15 mothers in that waiting room, at least two or three others must have been in the Gina Ford closet....
